Clinical profile of duplex kidneys in children and its association with vesicoureteric reflux

Abstract Background Duplex kidney is a relatively common renal anomaly with wide array of associations. With routine antenatal screening it increasingly diagnosed these days. this study, we aim to assess the clinical profile, prevalence vesicoureteric reflux and highlighting need for aggressive workup management in selected cases prevent further damage. Results Fifty-three children duplex kidneys who attended department pediatric surgery at our institution from December 2016 2021 were included study. The most mode presentation was urinary tract infection (58%). percent had an antenatally detected (out 46% asymptomatic, 33% UTI 11% other symptoms like straining, incontinence abdominal mass). Sixty-one patients conservatively managed 19 needed surgical intervention. Ureterocele condition necessitating surgery. Prevalence 60% comparable studies. Thirty-six scarring. Among scarring, 84% VUR 63% febrile UTI. Conclusion though congenital anomaly, requires systematic evaluation detect its various associations structured protocol according It has high incidence which potentially hazardous can affect function if not evaluated appropriately. also be associated obstructive conditions PUJO, ureterocele, ectopic megaureter cause rapid deterioration early enough. Though majority only follow-up antibiotic prophylaxis, there may certain sub group develop scarring management. Our study aims highlight such enough reduce morbidity.
